What Is an IRA?
An IRA is a type of account that provides investors a tax-advantaged way to invest for retirement (subject to eligibility). The IRA itself is not an investment, but it holds the investments you choose to save toward your retirement goal. IRAs can hold mutual funds or other securities.
The most common types of IRAs are accounts that you open on your own, as opposed to a workplace retirement plan where your employer opens the account for you. When changing jobs or retiring, you may also be able to roll over a retirement account from a previous employer's plan into a Rollover IRA.
